Cains sponsors tournament and special simultaneous display by super grandmaster against Island’s rising young chess stars.
The 15th Monarch Assurance Isle of Man International, which is to be held in Port Erin from 23 September to 1 October this year, and which has drawn entrants that include 33 grandmasters, is once again expected to establish the event as the most prestigious annual chess tournament held in the British Isles. Heading the list of 33 grandmasters (12 of whom have a rating of 2600 or above) is Armenian super grandmaster, 2713-rated Vladimir Akopian.
In a special display event sponsored by Cains and aimed at promoting the game among the Island’s youth, Akopian will give a display of simultaneous games against ten rising young chess stars drawn from schools on the Island. The display event is expected to take place on the final day of the tournament.
Jonathan Latham of Cains said: “Cains considers youth sport development in the Isle of Man to be very important and supports this event with pleasure. Where an opportunity to promote sport coincides with an opportunity to promote an important and unique local event the pleasure is all the greater.” He noted that support of a more intellectual sport such as chess complemented the firm’s already extensive support of more physical sports.
Dennis Hemsley, the organiser of the tournament, welcomed the firm’s sponsorship, saying: “The tournament brings not only the benefit of a significant amount of favourable international publicity for the Island but also affords local chess players a unique opportunity to meet some of the world’s most highly ranked players and to see them in action.”
