Mike Edwards appointed as a director of Cains

27th May 2005

Cains is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Edwards as a director with effect from 1 July 2005.

Mike, who is qualified as an advocate and English solicitor, is currently a senior associate in the corporate department of Cains. Although he has experience of corporate finance, investment funds and commercial law, his practice is focussed primarily on asset finance, principally ships, super-yachts and aircraft. He is a member of the executive committee of the Isle of Man Shipping Association and is involved actively with the Isle of Man Shipping Group in marketing the Island as a centre for shipping.

Prior to joining Cains some five years ago, Mike spent ten years employed by a major international ship operator, during which time he worked in the Isle of Man, South Africa, Hong Kong and Germany. He was involved in various commercial functions at managerial level, including project development as well as the negotiation and conclusion of significant joint-venture agreements and ship building contracts.

Mike Edwards remarked: "In my previous roles I worked with Cains on a number of transactions and always held them in the highest regard. Since joining the firm, I have come to appreciate the exceptional talents of the people here. We deal with complex cross-border financing on a daily basis and my international experience is of immense benefit. With the opening of a City of London office, this is a very exciting time in the evolution of the firm and I am looking forward to making a contribution to it."

Andrew Corlett, managing director of Cains, commented: "I am delighted that Mike will be joining the board of Cains. Mike is the first appointment to partner or board level for over a decade. It goes without saying that senior lawyers at this firm must be able to demonstrate first class legal abilities but, more than this, Mike is also able to draw on significant commercial expertise. When offering advice on sophisticated transactions it is vital that all those involved, including professional advisors, appreciate the commercial dynamic. With over 30 lawyers now at Cains it is also very important that any director has excellent managerial qualities”.
