Cains' Trainee attends the Commonwealth Youth Parliament

13th May 2005

Melissa Warrilow, a trainee at Cains Advocates Limited, has recently participated in the Commonwealth Youth Parliament, which was held in Brisbane, Australia. Melissa was selected to represent the Isle of Man by the Isle of Man Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, along with Beth Espey of Manx Radio. Seventy-five young people from 34 nations of the Commonwealth attended the prestigious event, which is held every five years. Acting Speaker Hon. Jim Fouras, MP, who presided over the Youth Parliament question time, commented: “Despite their inexperience, these young people aged 18 to 29 are punching well above their weight. Many are future leaders in the making… I am impressed”.

During one of the sessions, Melissa suggested the introduction of a Compulsory Primary Education Bill. There are 75 million children throughout the Commonwealth that do not have access to primary education. This was well received and the Youth Parliament unanimously elected to pass the Bill. Melissa commented: “It was a great privilege to represent the Isle of Man at the Youth Parliament and provided a unique opportunity to meet and discuss issues with enthusiastic young people from all different walks of life”.

Whilst in Brisbane, Melissa represented Cains at an introductory meeting with two lawyers from one of Australia’s largest and most successful law firms, Clayton Utz. Andrew Corlett, Managing Partner of Cains remarked “Melissa is an excellent young ambassador for the Manx Bar and the Isle of Man generally. In the coming years, it will be essential that we project ourselves positively as an island at every opportunity and at every relevant fora. I am very pleased that Melissa has seized her opportunity so well.”

Melissa graduated from Lancaster University and Lunds Universitet (Sweden) with a First Class Honours Degree in law and completed her postgraduate diploma in legal practice at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice. She joined Cains in September 2003 and is the President of the Isle of Man Young Lawyers’ Association. Melissa is the daughter of Keith and Theresa Warrilow of Dalby.
