New Lawyers for Cains Advocates Limited
12th January 2005
Cains is pleased to announce the recruitment of two additional lawyers into its corporate department.
Jonathan Latham is a corporate lawyer with corporate insurance and insurance finance experience. Jonathan was an attorney with Deneys Reitz, one of South Africa’s largest law firms, before moving to London where he spent four years with leading City firm, Lovells. Whilst at Lovells Jonathan was involved in a number of high profile merger and acquisition transactions. He also advised on such other matters as demutulisations, sales of insurance-backed loan receivables and insurance financing arrangements involving the Lloyd’s market. He commented: “After several years working in metropolitan environments I am delighted to join Cains, and to be involved in the high quality corporate and insurance work that is undertaken in a leading international offshore financial centre. I am looking forward tremendously to participating in the professional and wider life of the Island community.”
Daniel Mackelden is a corporate and mutual funds lawyer and joins Cains from leading Cayman Islands’ attorneys, Walkers. He is a qualified BVI lawyer and spent two years working in Tortola prior to which he was engaged for six years with Linklaters in London, Hong Kong and Tokyo, as well as spending time working in-house for a Sydney based telecommunications company. During his time with Linklaters Dan worked on a wide range of cross border banking and finance matters, with a particular emphasis on project and asset financing. Dan, who will be based in London although he will also be a regular visitor to the Island, remarked: “Having spent time with one leading offshore firm I am relishing the opportunity to continue to practice with another, and I hope that my BVI and other legal experience will be an asset to Cains and to its existing and future clients. I am particularly looking forward to being involved in the development of Cains’ London office.”
Andrew Corlett, managing director at Cains, commented: “These additional appointments signify our continued commitment to provide specialist legal services to our clients, both on and off-Island. Jonathan and Dan have tremendous legal experience which will enhance our skill base by enabling us to provide expert insurance finance services, as well as advice and assistance on both BVI and Isle of Man structures.
Increasingly, leading offshore law firms will be offering clients legal expertise from a range of jurisdictions and not just from the law firm’s home jurisdictions. Cains needs to be conscious of these developments and Jonathan and Dan’s recruitments are part of this strategy.
In 2005 we will be establishing a full, continuously manned operation in the City of London which we hope will assist in increasing the Island’s profile and help generate additional work not only for Cains but also for other Island-based businesses.
In order to market the Isle of Man credibly, I think both the industry and government are agreed that we need to move forward rapidly and introduce a modern corporate vehicle as soon as possible. It is pleasing to note the progress that is being made in this vital area.”
